Glossary of terms

Transcription:  Transcribing audio files (i.e. .WAV, .mp3, .AIFF, etc.) and typing the spoken text into an electronic file.
 
Translation: An understanding of the meaning of a source text in one language and the production of an equivalent target text that conveys the same message in another language.

Proofreading: A careful check of a document that includes comparing the document with the source text in the original language to ensure nothing has been left out; it always involves correcting spelling, grammar and formatting errors.

Editing: In the translation field this means reviewing the translated text focusing more on the target language (without comparing the translation to the source text anymore) to ensure the message has been conveyed and that the translated text is correct and accurate. In filmmaking, editing is the process of assembling sequences of raw material into a final viewable product, also known as “montage”.

Time-code Spotting: Marking the exact moment when each subtitle must come in and out on the screen using the eight-digit time codes printed on the video as reference.
 
Character/Subtitle Creation: Generating the caption set in the foreign language that will be displayed on the subtitled footage.
 
Lip-synching: The replacement of the original audio with a brand new recorded foreign language track which matches the mouth movements of the original characters.
 
UN-style voice replacement: When the foreign language track starts with a few second delay with respect to the original audio; it is played throughout the video at a lower volume than the foreign language track.
 
DVD Authoring: Creation of authored DVDs with menu buttons, etc. in both PAL/NTSC format.
 
Video editing Services: See “editing”.

Interpreting: An activity that consists of facilitating oral language communication, either simultaneously or consecutively, between two or more speakers who are not speaking the same language. Interpreting can be carried out in person or also over the phone.

Abstract Creation: The process of creating a concise summary of a longer text; it is especially useful in legal procedures and journalism.

Document review: The process of data collection involving the examination of existing records or documents.

Teaching: Instructing  foreign languages to children and adults both in group or in a one-on-one setting.
