This is an excerpt of a movie script we translated from Italian into English: THE INNU By Graziella La Rosa Documentary Script for Doc 3 The Innu are indigenous people that live between the North of Quebec and the Labrador peninsula.  They have been living in those territories for more than 2,000 years, while the Euro-Canadians arrived only at the end of the 19th century, less than two centuries ago. Today the Innu represent around 1% of the population of Quebec and their relationship with the white man is a very recent history, of just 50 years. Maniotenam is one of their biggest communities. QUEBEC CITY Question: Who are the Innu? Girl: No, I don’t know, thank you. QUEBEC CITY Question: What do you think about the problems the Innu have? Woman: Why, they have problems? Young man: I know they have problems with alcohol and drugs because they feel maladjusted.  The government is trying to do something to put them in the best living conditions. YVONNE VOLLANT About the past I remember that we were a family of 3 children and each year with mom and dad we would leave from Moisie River to go to the forest, where we stayed for 11 months.  We would go back to Moisie River end of July and in September we would go hunting again.   We would leave with our canoes, each family would place the stack of food in the canoe first and then the people that were leaving.  The trip would last several weeks.  Once the families got to the hunting territory they would separate and meet up again for Christmas in the same place to celebrate all together.  For Christmas we had flour, corn and dried meat. Once we got to our hunting territory we’d set up our tent and my father would go hunting for one or two weeks.  My mother and the younger ones would stay in the tent.
